A Cenotaph, Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKL

Oh hadst thou fall'n brave youth on that proud dayA
When our victorious fleet o'er the red surgeB
Rolled in terrific glory thou hadst fall'nC
Most honoured and Remembrance while she thoughtD
Upon thy gallant end had dried her tearE
Now far beyond the huge Atlantic waveF
Thy bones decay the withering pestilenceG
That swept the islands of the western worldH
Smote thee untimely drooping to the tombI
But 'tis enough whate'er a soldier's fateJ
That firm he hied him where stern honour badeK
Though with unequal strength he sunk and diedL
