The wind blows shrill along the hillA
Black is the night and coldB
The sky hangs low with its weight of snowC
And the drifts are deep on the woldB
But what care I for wind or snowC
And what care I for the coldB
Oh where is my lambD
My one ewe lambD
That strayed from the foldB
-
The beasts are safely gathered inE
Black is the night and coldB
They are snug and warm and safe from harmF
In stall and byre and foldB
And the dogs and I by the blazing fireG
Care nought for the snow and the coldB
Oh where is my lambD
My one ewe lambD
That strayed from the foldB
-
The barns are bursting with their storeH
Of grain like yellow goldB
A full fat year has brought good cheerI
Black is the night and coldB
But What care I for teeming barnsJ
And what care I for goldB
Oh where is my lambD
My one ewe lambD
That strayed from the foldB
-
In the great kitchen maids and menK
Black is the night and coldB
Laugh loud and long with jest and songL
And merry revel holdB
Let them laugh and sing let them have their flingM
But for me I am growing oldB
Oh where is my lambD
My one ewe lambD
That strayed from the foldB
-
The old house moans and sighs and groansN
Black is the night and coldB
We have seen brave times you and I old friendO
But now we are growing oldB
We have stood foursquare to many a stormP
But now we are growing oldB
Oh where is my lambD
My one ewe lambD
That strayed from the foldB
-
Her mother sleeps on the hill out thereQ
Black is the night and coldB
She is free from care she is happier thereQ
Beneath the warm brown mouldB
And I've sometimes hoped they may have metR
And the end of the tale be toldB
Ah where is our lambD
Our one ewe lambD
That strayed from the foldB
-
Was that a branch that shed its loadS
Black is the night and coldB
Or was it a footstep in the snowC
A timid footstep halting slowC
Ah me I am getting oldB
Is that a tapping soft and lowC
Can it be I thought I heard but noC
'Twas only a branch that shed its snowC
God's truth I am getting oldB
For I thought maybeT
It was my lambD
Come home again to the foldB
-
Dear Lord a hand at the frozen paneU
White on the night's black coldB
O my lamb my lamb are you come againK
My dear lost lamb are you come againK
Are you come again to the foldB
It is It is Now I thank Thee LordV
For Thy Mercies manifoldB
She is come againK
She is home againK
My lamb that strayed from the foldB
