THE PLEA OF THE MUNITION WORKERA
-
Rattle and clatter and clank and whirrA
And it's long and long the day isB
From earliest morn to late at nightC
And all night long the selfsame songD
Rattle and clank and whirrA
Day in day out all day all nightC
Rattle and clank and whirrA
With faces tight with all our mightC
Rattle and clank and whirrA
We may not stop and we dare not errA
Our men are risking their lives out thereA
And we at home must do our shareA
But it's long and long the day isB
We'll break if we must but we cannot spareA
A thought for ourselves or the kids or careA
For it's Rattle and clatter and clank and whirrA
Our men are giving their lives out thereA
And we'll give ours we will do our shareA
Rattle and clank and whirrA
-
Are our faces grave and our eyes intentE
Is every ounce that is in us bentE
On the uttermost pitch of accomplishmentF
Though it's long and long the day isB
Ah we know what it means if we fool or slackG
A rifle jammed and one comes not backG
And we never forget it's for us they gaveH
And so we will slave and slave and slaveH
Lest the men at the front should rue itI
Their all they gave and their lives we'll saveH
If the hardest of work can do itI
But it's long and long the day isB
-
Eight hours' ten hours' twelve hours' shiftJ
Oh it's long and long the day isB
Up before light and home in the nightC
That is our share in the desperate fightC
And it's long and long the day isB
Backs and arms and heads that acheK
Eyes over tired and legs that shakeK
And hearts full nigh to burst and breakK
Oh it's long and long the day isB
Week in week out not a second to spareA
But though it should kill us we'll do our shareA
For the sake of the lads who have gone out thereA
For the sake of us others to do and dareA
But it's long and long the day isB
-
Rattle and clatter and clank and whirrA
And thousands of wheels a spinningL
Spinning Death for the men of wrathM
Spinning Death for the broken trothN
And Life and a New BeginningL
Was there ever since ever the world was madeO
Such a horrible trade for a peace loving maidO
And such wonderful terrible spinningL
-
Oh it's dreary work and it's weary workP
But none of us all will fall or shirkP
