Gadara, A.d. 31 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCBDDB EBBBFFGG HHHHHII

Rabbi begone Thy powersA
Bring loss to us and oursA
Our ways are not as ThineB
Thou lovest men we swineB
Oh get you hence OmnipotenceC
And take this fool of ThineB
His soul What care we for his soulD
What good to us that Thou hast made him wholeD
Since we have lost our swineB
-
And Christ went sadlyE
He had wrought for them a signB
Of Love and Hope and Tenderness divineB
They wanted swineB
Christ stands without your door and gently knocksF
But if your gold or swine the entrance blocksF
He forces no man's hold he will departG
And leave you to the treasures of your heartG
-
No cumbered chamber will the Master shareH
But one swept bareH
By cleansing fires then plenished fresh and fairH
With meekness and humility and prayerH
There will He come yet coming even thereH
He stands and waits and will no entrance winI
Until the latch be lifted from withinI
