The sun shone white and fairA
This EastertideB
Yet all its sweetness seemed but to derideB
Our souls' despairA
For stricken hearts and loss and painC
Were everywhereA
We sang our AlleluiasD
We said The Christ is risenE
From this His earthly prisonE
The Christ indeed is risenE
He is gone up on highF
To the perfect peace of heavenE
-
Then with a sighF
We wonderedB
Our minds evolved grim hordes of hunsD
Our bruised hearts sank beneath the gunsD
On our very souls they thunderedB
Can you wonder Can you wonderG
That we wonderedB
As we heard the huns' guns thunderG
That we looked in one another's eyesD
And wonderedB
-
Is Christ indeed then risen from the deadB
Hath He not rather fledB
For ever from a world where HeH
Meets such contumelyI
-
Our hearts were sick with painC
As they beat the sad refrainC
How shall the Lord Christ come againJ
How can the Lord Christ come againJ
Nay will He come againJ
Is He not surely fledB
For ever from a world where HeH
Is still so buffetedB
-
But the day's glory all forbadeB
Such depth of woe Came to our aidB
The sun the birds the springing thingsD
The winging things the singing thingsD
And taught us thisD
After each Winter cometh SpringK
God's hand is still in everythingK
His mighty purposes are sureL
His endless love doth still endureL
And will not cease nor know remissD
Despite man's forfeitureG
-
The Lord is risen indeedB
In very truth and deedB
The Lord is risen is risen is risenE
He will supply our needB
-
So we took heart againJ
And built us refuges from painC
Within His covertureG
Strong towers of Love and Hope and FaithM
That shall maintainC
Our souls' estateB
Too high and greatB
For even Death to violateB
