Some time ago ere we were born or thought ofA
There lived a little girl who liked to roamB
Through lonely woods and lanes unknown unsought ofA
Such folk who like to stop and stay at homeB
She found out curious things in all her travelC
And one of her adventures I will tellD
Once in a wood she saw a path of gravelC
Which led to a small cottage in a dellD
-
And as the door stood open in walked boldlyE
This child whose name was Silverlocks I'm toldF
There was nobody there to treat her coldlyE
No friend to call her back no nurse to scoldF
She found herself within a parlour charmingG
And there upon the table there were placedH
Three basins sending up a smell so warmingG
That she at once felt hungry and must tasteH
The largest basin first but hot and bitingG
The soup was in it and the second tooI
The smallest basin tasted so invitingG
That up she ate it all with small adoI
-
And next she saw three chairs and tried to sit inJ
The biggest but it was too hard and highK
The middle one she scarcely seemed to fit inJ
But in the smallest chair sat easilyE
And rocked herself her ease and comfort takingG
Singing the pretty songs she knew so wellD
When oh the little chair cracked loud and breakingG
Gave way all suddenly and down she fellD
-
Ah well she thought there may be beds to lie onL
Upstairs I think I'll go at once and seeE
And so there were she said aloud I'll try oneM
For I am tired and sleepy as can beE
The biggest bed was not of feathers surelyE
It was so hard and so she tried the nextN
And found it little better but securelyE
She slept upon the smallest one unvextN
The little house belonged to bears not personsO
The Father Bear so very rough and largeP
The Mother Bear I have known many worse onesO
-
And then the little Cub their only chargeP
They had gone for a walk before their dinnerQ
Returning Father growled Who's touched my soupR
Who's touched my soup said Mother with voice thinnerQ
But mine said little Cub is finished upS
They turned to draw their chairs a little nearerQ
Who's sat in my chair growled the Father BearT
Who's sat in my chair said the Mother clearerQ
And squeaked the little Cub Who's broken my small chairT
-
They rushed upstairs and Father Bruin growlingG
Cried out Who's lain upon my bedN
Who's lain on mine cried Mother Bruin howlingG
-
But some one lies on mine the small Bear saidN
We'll kill the child and eat her for our dinnerQ
The Father growled but said the Mother NoU
For supper she shall be and I will skin herQ
No said the little Cub we'll let her goU
-
So Silverlocks in sudden terror flyingG
Reached home and when the Nurse the story hearsV
She says You are in luck there's no denyingG
To get away in safety from THREE BEARSW
