Quand longtemps a grond la bouche du V suveA
-
I viiA
-
-
When huge Vesuvius in its torment longB
Threatening has growled its cavernous jaws amongC
When its hot lava like the bubbling wineD
Foaming doth all its monstrous edge incarnadineD
Then is alarm in NaplesE
-
With dismayF
Wanton and wild her weeping thousands pourG
Convulsive grasp the ground its rage to stayF
Implore the angry Mount in vain imploreG
For lo a column tow'ring more and moreG
Of smoke and ashes from the burning crestH
Shoots like a vulture's neck reared from its airy nestH
-
Sudden a flash and from th' enormous denD
Th' eruption's lurid mass bursts forth amainD
Bounding in frantic ecstasy Ah thenD
Farewell to Grecian fount and Tuscan faneD
Sails in the bay imbibe the purpling stainD
The while the lava in profusion wideI
Flings o'er the mountain's neck its showery locks untiedI
-
It comes it comes that lava deep and richJ
That dower which fertilizes fields and fillsK
New moles upon the waters bay and beachL
Broad sea and clustered isles one terror thrillsK
As roll the red inexorable rillsK
While Naples trembles in her palacesK
More helpless than the leaves when tempests shake the treesK
-
Prodigious chaos streets in ashes lostM
Dwellings devoured and vomited againD
Roof against neighbor roof bewildered tossedM
The waters boiling and the burning plainD
While clang the giant steeples as they reelN
Unprompted their own tocsin pealN
-
Yet 'mid the wreck of cities and the prideI
Of the green valleys and the isles laid lowO
The crash of walls the tumult waste and wideI
O'er sea and land 'mid all this work of woeO
Vesuvius still though close its crater glowO
Forgetful spares Heaven wills that it should spareP
The lonely cell where kneels an aged priest in prayerP
