See all the children gathered thereC
Their mother near so young so fairC
An eider sister she might beD
And yet she hears amid their gamesA
The shaking of their unknown namesA
In the dark urn of destinyD
-
She wakes their smiles she soothes their caresA
On that pure heart so like to theirsA
Her spirit with such life is rifeE
That in its golden rays we seeD
Touched into graceful poesyD
The dull cold commonplace of lifeE
-
Still following watching whether burnF
The Christmas log in winter sternF
While merry plays go roundG
Or streamlets laugh to breeze of MayH
That shakes the leaf to break awayH
A shadow falling to the groundG
-
If some poor man with hungry eyesD
Her baby's coral bauble spiesD
She marks his look with famine wildI
For Christ's dear sake she makes with joyJ
An alms gift of the silver toyJ
A smiling angel of the childI
