Rhyme Scheme: AABC DDEE FFGG HIJJ

They gave me a name but not a placeA
No warmth behind it no gentle graceA
It echoed in rooms where I felt unknownB
A word they spoke but never ownedC
-
I carried it like a borrowed coatD
Worn and faded barely afloatD
Not stitched with love nor pride nor claimE
Just syllables not soul not flameE
-
They called me family but kept me apartF
A name without welcome a name without heartF
I searched their eyes for signs of careG
But found reflections that weren t thereG
-
I am not just letters strung in lineH
I am memory blood and timeI
A story waiting to be heardJ
A life that s more than just a wordJ

Poet's note: Not Just a Name is a poignant meditation on identity, belonging, and the emotional weight of being unseen. Through lyrical verses, it explores the ache of being given a name without the love or recognition that should accompany it. The poem speaks to the experience of feeling like an outsider within one's own story—called family, yet held at distance.
