When boyhood's fire was in my bloodB
I read of ancient freemenC
For Greece and Rome who bravely stoodD
THREE HUNDRED MEN AND THREE MENC
And then I prayed I yet might seeE
Our fetters rent in twainF
And Ireland long a province beE
A NATION ONCE AGAINC

And from that time through wildest woeG
That hope has shone a far lightH
Nor could love's brightest summer glowG
Outshine that solemn starlightH
It seemed to watch above my headI
In forum field and faneF
Its angel voice sang round my bedI
A NATION ONCE AGAINC

-
It whispered too that freedom's arkJ
And service high and holyE
Would be profaned by feelings darkJ
And passions vain or lowlyE
For freedom comes from God's right handK
And needs a godly trainF
And righteous men must make our landK
A NATION ONCE AGAINC

So as I grew from boy to manM
I bent me to that biddingN
My spirit of each selfish planM
And cruel passion riddingN
For thus I hoped some day to aidO
Oh can such hope be vainF
When my dear country shall be madeO
A NATION ONCE AGAINC
