Loneliness Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBACC DCCDCC ECCEFG HIIHCC JEEJCC CKKCCC LMMLNN| Dear I am lonely for the bay is still | A |
| As any hill girt lake the long brown beach | B |
| Lies bare and wet As far as eye can reach | B |
| There is no motion Even on the hill | A |
| Where the breeze loves to wander I can see | C |
| No stir of leaves nor any waving tree | C |
| - | |
| There is a great red cliff that fronts my view | D |
| A bare unsightly thing it angers me | C |
| With its unswerving grim monotony | C |
| The mackerel weir with branching boughs askew | D |
| Stands like a fire swept forest while the sea | C |
| Laps it with soothing sighs continually | C |
| - | |
| There are no tempests in this sheltered bay | E |
| The stillness frets me and I long to be | C |
| Where winds sweep strong and blow tempestuously | C |
| To stand upon some hill top far away | E |
| And face a gathering gale and let the stress | F |
| Of Nature's mood subdue my restlessness | G |
| - | |
| An impulse seizes me a mad desire | H |
| To tear away that red browed cliff to sweep | I |
| Its crest of trees and huts into the deep | I |
| To force a gap by axe or storm or fire | H |
| And let rush in with motion glad and free | C |
| The rolling waves of the wild wondrous sea | C |
| - | |
| Sometimes I wonder if I am the child | J |
| Of calm law loving parents or a stray | E |
| From some wild gypsy camp I cannot stay | E |
| Quiet among my fellows when this wild | J |
| Longing for freedom takes me I must fly | C |
| To my dear woods and know my liberty | C |
| - | |
| It is this cringing to a social law | C |
| That I despise these changing senseless forms | K |
| Of fashion And until a thousand storms | K |
| Of God's impatience shall reveal the flaw | C |
| In man's pet system he will weave the spell | C |
| About his heart and dream that all is well | C |
| - | |
| Ah Life is hard Dear Heart for I am left | L |
| To battle with my old time fears alone | M |
| I must live calmly on and make no moan | M |
| Though of my hoped for happiness bereft | L |
| Thou wilt not come and still the red cliff lies | N |
| Hiding my ocean from these longing eyes | N |
