The Prisoner Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHEEIB JKLB FMNIOBP QERESI ITB

I looked out the barred window everydayA
I see a woman gently carressing her baby Can I be that babyB
I look to the rightC
I see a young coupleD
Her head tilted on his shoulderE
Can I be that womanF
I look far aheadG
I see a girl skating over the frozen lakeH
her hair flowing like the lake in summerE
I imagine her mother calling behind herE
Lilly time to goI
Can I be LillyB
-
Oh how I long for a ray of sunshineJ
or a trickle of rain down my cheekK
I feel myself being carried away with the snowflakesL
I feel freeB
-
The lock turns and the cell door slams openF
I jump backM
I feel my soul still clinging to those barsN
my eyes still picturing the frosty meadowI
The jailor pulls my rusty chains and ensures they are firmO
I look into his eyes longing to see a sliver of pityB
He turns towards the window and seals it shutP
-
His face turns sedate and he hurries to his headman's callQ
The cell door closes like a roar of thunderE
I look at my bounded handsR
Peter's ring still on my bloodied fingerE
I picture myself in his protective armsS
I never want to let him goI
-
My eyes quickly turn towards the windowI
I see my soul on the other sideT
I am now freeB
