Down by the railroad in a green valleyA
By dancing water there he stayed awhileB
Singing and three men with him listenersC
All tramps all homeless reapers of the windD
Motionless now and while the song went onE
Transfigured into mages thronged with visionsF
There with the late light of the sunset on themG
And on clear water spinning from a springH
Through little cones of sand dancing and fadingH
Close beside pine woods where a hermit thrushI
Cast when love dazzled him shadows of musicJ
That lengthened fluting through the singer's pausesK
While the sure earth rolled eastward bringing starsL
Over the singer and the men that listenedM
There by the roadside understanding allN
-
A train went by but nothing seemed to be changedO
Some eye at a car window must have flashedP
From the plush world inside the glassy PullmanQ
Carelessly bearing off the scene foreverR
With idle wonder what the men were doingH
Seeing they were so strangely fixed and seeingH
Torn papers from their smeary dreary mealS
Spread on the ground with old tomato cansT
Muddy with dregs of lukewarm chicoryR
Neglected while they listened to the songU
And while he sang the singer's face was liftedV
And the sky shook down a soft light upon himW
Out of its branches where like fruits there wereR
Many beautiful stars and planets movingH
With lands upon them rising from their seasX
Glorious lands with glittering sands upon themG
With soils of gold and magic mould for seedingH
The shining loam of lands afoam with gardensF
On mightier stars with giant rains and sunsF
There in the heavens but on none of allN
Was there ground better than he stood uponE
There was no world there in the sky above himW
Deeper in promise than the earth beneath himW
Whose dust had flowered up in him the singerR
And three men understanding every wordY
-
The Tramp SingsZ
-
I will sing I will go and never ask me WhyA2
I was born a rover and a passer byA2
-
I seem to myself like water and skyA2
A river and a rover and a passer byA2
-
But in the winter three years backB2
We lit us a night fire by the trackB2
-
And the snow came up and the fire it flewC2
And we couldn't find the warming room for twoC2
-
One had to suffer so I left him the fireR
And I went to the weather from my heart's desireR
-
It was night on the line it was no more fireR
But the zero whistle through the icy wireR
-
As I went suffering through the snowD2
Something like a shadow came moving slowD2
-
I went up to it and I said a wordY
Something flew above it like a kind of birdY
-
I leaned in closer and I saw a faceE2
A light went round me but I kept my placeE2
-
My heart went open like an apple slicedF2
I saw my Saviour and I saw my ChristF2
-
Well you may not read it in a bookG2
But it takes a gentle Saviour to give a gentle lookG2
-
I looked in his eyes and I read the newsH2
His heart was having the railroad bluesH2
-
Oh the railroad blues will cost you dearR
Keeps you moving on for something that you don't see hereR
-
We stood and whispered in a kind of moonI2
The line was looking like May and JuneI2
-
I found he was a roamer and a journey manJ2
Looking for a lodging since the night beganJ2
-
He went to the doors but he didn't have the payK2
He went to the windows then he went awayK2
-
Says We'll walk together and we'll both be fedL2
Says I will give you the 'other' breadL2
-
Oh the bread he gave and without moneyA
O drink O fire O burning honeyA
-
It went all through me like a shining stormM2
I saw inside me it was light and warmM2
-
I saw deep under and I saw aboveN2
I saw the stars weighed down with loveN2
-
They sang that love to burning birthO2
They poured that music to the earthO2
-
I heard the stars sing low like mothersC
He said Now look and help feed othersC
-
I looked around and as close as touchP2
Was everybody that suffered muchP2
-
They reached out there was darkness onlyA
They could not see us they were lonelyA
-
I saw the hearts that deaths took hold ofN2
With the wounds bare that were not told ofN2
-
Hearts with things in them making gashesK
Hearts that were choked with their dreams' ashesK
-
Women in front of the rolled back airR
Looking at their breasts and nothing thereR
-
Good men wasting and trapped in hellsK
Hurt lads shivering with the fare thee wellsK
-
I saw them as if something bound themG
I stood there but my heart went round themG
-
I begged him not to let me see them wastedV
Says Tell them then what you have tastedV
-
Told him I was weak as a rained on beeA
Told him I was lost Says Lean on meA
-
Something happened then I could not tellQ2
But I knew I had the water for every hellQ2
-
Any other thing it was no use bringingH
They needed what the stars were singingH
-
What the whole sky sang like waves of lightR2
The tune that it danced to day and nightR2
-
Oh I listened to the sky for the tune to comeS2
The song seemed easy but I stood there dumbS2
-
The stars could feel me reaching through themG
They let down light and drew me to themG
-
I stood in the sky in a light like dayK2
Drinking in the word that all things sayK2
-
Where the worlds hang growing in clustered shapesK
Dripping the music like wine from grapesK
-
With Love Love Love above the painT2
The vine like song with its wine like rainT2
-
Through heaven under heaven the song takes rootU2
Of the turning burning deathless fruitU2
-
I came to the earth and the pain so near meA
I tried that song but they couldn't hear meA
-
I went down into the ground to growD2
A seed for a song that would make men knowD2
-
Into the ground from my roamer's lightR2
I went he watched me sink to nightR2
-
Deep in the ground from my human grievingH
His pain ploughed in me to believingH
-
Oh he took earth's pain to be his brideV2
While the heart of life sang in his sideV2
-
For I felt that pain I took its kissK
My heart broke into dust with hisK
-
Then sudden through the earth I found life springingH
The dust men trampled on was singingH
-
Deep in my dust I felt its tonesK
The roots of beauty went round my bonesK
-
I stirred I rose like a flame like a riverR
I stood on the line I could sing foreverR
-
Love had pierced into my human sheathingH
Song came out of me simple as breathingH
-
A freight came by the line grew colderR
He laid his hand upon my shoulderR
-
Says Don't stay on the line such nightsK
And led me by the hand to the station lightsK
-
I asked him in front of the station house wallN
If he had lodging Says None at allN
-
I pointed to my heart and looked in his faceK
Here if you haven't got a better placeK
-
He looked and he said Oh we still must roamW2
But if you'll keep it open well I'll call it 'home'W2
-
The thrush now slept whose pillow was his wingH
So the song ended and the four remainedX2
Still in the faint starshine that silvered themW2
While the low sound went on of broken waterR
Out of the spring and through the darkness flowingH
Over a stone that held it from the seaA
Whether the men spoke after could not be toldY2
A mist from the ground so veiled them but they waitedV
A little longer till the moon came upZ2
Then on the gilded track leading to the mountainsK
Against the moon they faded in common goldY2
And earth bore East with all toward the new morningH
