Down by the railroad in a green valley	A
By dancing water there he stayed awhile	B
Singing and three men with him listeners	C
All tramps all homeless reapers of the wind	D
Motionless now and while the song went on	E
Transfigured into mages thronged with visions	F
There with the late light of the sunset on them	G
And on clear water spinning from a spring	H
Through little cones of sand dancing and fading	H
Close beside pine woods where a hermit thrush	I
Cast when love dazzled him shadows of music	J
That lengthened fluting through the singer's pauses	K
While the sure earth rolled eastward bringing stars	L
Over the singer and the men that listened	M
There by the roadside understanding all	N

A train went by but nothing seemed to be changed	O
Some eye at a car window must have flashed	P
From the plush world inside the glassy Pullman	Q
Carelessly bearing off the scene forever	R
With idle wonder what the men were doing	H
Seeing they were so strangely fixed and seeing	H
Torn papers from their smeary dreary meal	S
Spread on the ground with old tomato cans	T
Muddy with dregs of lukewarm chicory	R
Neglected while they listened to the song	U
And while he sang the singer's face was lifted	V
And the sky shook down a soft light upon him	W
Out of its branches where like fruits there were	R
Many beautiful stars and planets moving	H
With lands upon them rising from their seas	X
Glorious lands with glittering sands upon them	G
With soils of gold and magic mould for seeding	H
The shining loam of lands afoam with gardens	F
On mightier stars with giant rains and suns	F
There in the heavens but on none of all	N
Was there ground better than he stood upon	E
There was no world there in the sky above him	W
Deeper in promise than the earth beneath him	W
Whose dust had flowered up in him the singer	R
And three men understanding every word	Y

I will sing I will go and never ask me Why	A2
I was born a rover and a passer by	A2

I seem to myself like water and sky	A2
A river and a rover and a passer by	A2

But in the winter three years back	B2
We lit us a night fire by the track	B2

And the snow came up and the fire it flew	C2
And we couldn't find the warming room for two	C2

One had to suffer so I left him the fire	R
And I went to the weather from my heart's desire	R

It was night on the line it was no more fire	R
But the zero whistle through the icy wire	R

As I went suffering through the snow	D2
Something like a shadow came moving slow	D2

I went up to it and I said a word	Y
Something flew above it like a kind of bird	Y

I leaned in closer and I saw a face	E2
A light went round me but I kept my place	E2

My heart went open like an apple sliced	F2
I saw my Saviour and I saw my Christ	F2

Well you may not read it in a book	G2
But it takes a gentle Saviour to give a gentle look	G2

I looked in his eyes and I read the news	H2
His heart was having the railroad blues	H2

Oh the railroad blues will cost you dear	R
Keeps you moving on for something that you don't see here	R

We stood and whispered in a kind of moon	I2
The line was looking like May and June	I2

I found he was a roamer and a journey man	J2
Looking for a lodging since the night began	J2

He went to the doors but he didn't have the pay	K2
He went to the windows then he went away	K2

Says We'll walk together and we'll both be fed	L2
Says I will give you the 'other' bread	L2

Oh the bread he gave and without money	A
O drink O fire O burning honey	A

It went all through me like a shining storm	M2
I saw inside me it was light and warm	M2

I saw deep under and I saw above	N2
I saw the stars weighed down with love	N2

They sang that love to burning birth	O2
They poured that music to the earth	O2

I heard the stars sing low like mothers	C
He said Now look and help feed others	C

I looked around and as close as touch	P2
Was everybody that suffered much	P2

They reached out there was darkness only	A
They could not see us they were lonely	A

I saw the hearts that deaths took hold of	N2
With the wounds bare that were not told of	N2

Hearts with things in them making gashes	K
Hearts that were choked with their dreams' ashes	K

Women in front of the rolled back air	R
Looking at their breasts and nothing there	R

Good men wasting and trapped in hells	K
Hurt lads shivering with the fare thee wells	K

I saw them as if something bound them	G
I stood there but my heart went round them	G

I begged him not to let me see them wasted	V
Says Tell them then what you have tasted	V

Told him I was weak as a rained on bee	A
Told him I was lost Says Lean on me	A

Something happened then I could not tell	Q2
But I knew I had the water for every hell	Q2

Any other thing it was no use bringing	H
They needed what the stars were singing	H

What the whole sky sang like waves of light	R2
The tune that it danced to day and night	R2

Oh I listened to the sky for the tune to come	S2
The song seemed easy but I stood there dumb	S2

The stars could feel me reaching through them	G
They let down light and drew me to them	G

I stood in the sky in a light like day	K2
Drinking in the word that all things say	K2

Where the worlds hang growing in clustered shapes	K
Dripping the music like wine from grapes	K

With Love Love Love above the pain	T2
The vine like song with its wine like rain	T2

Through heaven under heaven the song takes root	U2
Of the turning burning deathless fruit	U2

I came to the earth and the pain so near me	A
I tried that song but they couldn't hear me	A

I went down into the ground to grow	D2
A seed for a song that would make men know	D2

Into the ground from my roamer's light	R2
I went he watched me sink to night	R2

Deep in the ground from my human grieving	H
His pain ploughed in me to believing	H

Oh he took earth's pain to be his bride	V2
While the heart of life sang in his side	V2

For I felt that pain I took its kiss	K
My heart broke into dust with his	K

Then sudden through the earth I found life springing	H
The dust men trampled on was singing	H

Deep in my dust I felt its tones	K
The roots of beauty went round my bones	K

I stirred I rose like a flame like a river	R
I stood on the line I could sing forever	R

Love had pierced into my human sheathing	H
Song came out of me simple as breathing	H

A freight came by the line grew colder	R
He laid his hand upon my shoulder	R

Says Don't stay on the line such nights	K
And led me by the hand to the station lights	K

I asked him in front of the station house wall	N
If he had lodging Says None at all	N

I pointed to my heart and looked in his face	K
Here if you haven't got a better place	K

He looked and he said Oh we still must roam	W2
But if you'll keep it open well I'll call it 'home'	W2

The thrush now slept whose pillow was his wing	H
So the song ended and the four remained	X2
Still in the faint starshine that silvered them	W2
While the low sound went on of broken water	R
Out of the spring and through the darkness flowing	H
Over a stone that held it from the sea	A
Whether the men spoke after could not be told	Y2
A mist from the ground so veiled them but they waited	V
A little longer till the moon came up	Z2
Then on the gilded track leading to the mountains	K
Against the moon they faded in common gold	Y2
And earth bore East with all toward the new morning	H
