Octavio Paz Night Poems

  • 1.
    Beautiful face
That like a daisy opens its petals to the sun
    So do you
Open your face to me as I turn the page.
  • 2.
I turn the page of the day,
    writing what I'm told
by the motion of your eyelashes.

  • 3.
In my body you search the mountain
for the sun buried in its forest.
In your body I search for the boat
adrift in the middle of the night.
  • 4.
    There's a motionless tree
    And another one coming forward
    A river of trees
    Hits my chest
  • 5.
Your hair is lost in the forest,
    your feet touching mine.
Asleep you are bigger than the night,

  • 7.
    Through the conduits of blood
    my body in your body
    spring of night
my tongue of sun in your forest
  • 8.
No center, no above, no below
    Ceaselessly devouring and engendering itself
    Whirlpool space
  • 9.
Listen to me as one listens to the rain,
    not attentive, not distracted,
    light footsteps, thin drizzle,
water that is air, air that is time,

Poem of the day

Ernest Dowson Poem
Villanelle Of Sunset
 by Ernest Dowson

Behold the weary West!

Sleep rounds with equal zest
Man's toil and children's play;
Come hither, Child! and rest.
