KaoriiKap: yeah i think this film was a big influence on Mira Nair. So far her two biggest inspirations I consider to be Shyam Benegal works (esp for feminist storylines) and this movie (in brilliantly depicting how once you get into poverty it's almost impossible to break from it)

Mira Nair’s first film is buzzing with energy and Bombay is such a visually rich place; every inch of it is detailed with some kind of activity. This movie captures it so perfectly.
Criterion has yet to get to it, but it deserves the treatment.
