Shadows Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI JKJK

They seem'd to those who saw them meetA
The casual friends of every dayB
Her smile was undisturb'd and sweetA
His courtesy was free and gayB
-
But yet if one the other's nameC
In some unguarded moment heardD
The heart you thought so calm and tameC
Would struggle like a captured birdD
-
And letters of mere formal phraseE
Were blister'd with repeated tearsF
And this was not the work of daysE
But had gone on for years and yearsG
-
Alas that love was not too strongH
For maiden shame and manly prideI
Alas that they delay'd so longH
The goal of mutual bliss besideI
-
Yet what no chance could then revealJ
And neither would be first to ownK
Let fate and courage now concealJ
When truth could bring remorse aloneK
