FXMC1957: 1 December 1934. Sergei Kirov, a close collaborator of Joseph Stalin, was assassinated at Leningrad party headquarters. His death at the age of 48 was used as a pretext for Stalin to escalate his purge of political opponents, even though Stalin had secretly ordered the killing.

Knowledgepoint: 30 November 1936, The Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire at Sydenham, London. The spectacular blaze was seen miles away. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, it was originally erected in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition in 1851.
