The Crows At Washington. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCA DDAEAEA FGFHGHA IJKILJIA JMJMIINNJJA

Slow flapping to the setting sunA
By twos and threes in wavering rowsB
As twilight shadows dimly closeC
The crows fly over WashingtonA
-
Under the crimson sunset skyD
Virginian woodlands leafless lieD
In wintry torpor bleak and dunA
Through the rich vault of heaven which shinesE
Like a warmed opal in the sunA
With wide advance in broken linesE
The crows fly over WashingtonA
-
Over the Capitol's white domeF
Across the obelisk soaring bareG
To prick the clouds they travel homeF
Content and weary winnowingH
With dusky vans the golden airG
Which hints the coming of the springH
Though winter whitens WashingtonA
-
The dim deep air the level rayI
Of dying sunlight on their plumesJ
Give them a beauty not their ownK
Their hoarse notes fail and faint awayI
A rustling murmur floating downL
Blends sweetly with the thickening gloomsJ
They touch with grace the fading dayI
Slow flying over WashingtonA
-
I stand and watch with clouded eyesJ
These dim battalions move alongM
Out of the distance memory criesJ
Of days when life and hope were strongM
When love was prompt and wit was gayI
Even then at evening as to dayI
I watched while twilight hovered dimN
Over Potomac's curving rimN
This selfsame flight of homing crowsJ
Blotting the sunset's fading roseJ
Above the roofs of WashingtonA
