Under the high unclouded sunA
That makes the ship and shadow oneA
I sail away as from the fortB
Booms sullenly the noonday gunA
-
The odorous airs blow thin and fineC
The sparkling waves like emeralds shineC
The lustre of the coral reefsD
Gleams whitely through the tepid brineC
-
And glitters o'er the liquid milesE
The jewelled ring of verdant islesE
Where generous Nature holds her courtB
Of ripened bloom and sunny smilesE
-
Encinctured by the faithful seasF
Inviolate gardens load the breezeF
Where flaunt like giant warders' plumesG
The pennants of the cocoa treesF
-
Enthroned in light and bathed in balmH
In lonely majesty the PalmH
Blesses the isles with waving handsI
High Priest of the eternal CalmH
-
Yet Northward with an equal mindJ
I steer my course and leave behindJ
The rapture of the Southern skiesK
The wooing of the Southern windJ
-
For here o'er Nature's wanton bloomL
Falls far and near the shade of gloomL
Cast from the hovering vulture wingsM
Of one dark thought of woe and doomL
-
I know that in the snow white pinesN
The brave Norse fire of freedom shinesN
And fain for this I leave the landO
Where endless summer pranks the vinesN
-
O strong free North so wise and braveP
O South too lovely for a slaveP
Why read ye not the changeless truthQ
The free can conquer but to saveP
-
May God upon these shining sandsI
Send Love and Victory clasping handsI
And Freedom's banners wave in peaceR
For ever o'er the rescued landsI
-
And here in that triumphant hourS
Shall yielding beauty wed with powerS
And blushing earth and smiling seaT
In dalliance deck the bridal bowerS
-
KEY WESTU
