My dear wife sits beside the fireA
With folded hands and dreaming eyesB
Watching the restless flames aspireC
And rapt in thralling memoriesD
I mark the fitful firelight flingE
Its warm caresses on her browF
And kiss her hands' unmelting snowG
And glisten on her wedding ringE
-
The proud free head that crowns so wellH
The neck superb whose outlines glideI
Into the bosom's perfect swellH
Soft billowed by its peaceful tideI
The cheek's faint flush the lip's red glowG
The gracious charm her beauty wearsJ
Fill my fond eyes with tender tearsJ
As in the days of long agoG
-
Days long ago when in her eyesB
The only heaven I cared for layK
When from our thoughtless ParadiseL
All care and toil dwelt far awayK
When Hope in wayward fancies throveM
And rioted in secret sweetsN
Beguiled by Passion's dear deceitsN
The mysteries of maiden loveO
-
One year had passed since first my sightP
Was gladdened by her girlish charmsQ
When on a rapturous summer nightP
I clasped her in possessing armsQ
And now ten years have rolled awayK
And left such blessings as their dowerR
I owe her tenfold at this hourA
The love that lit our wedding dayK
-
For now vague hovering o'er her formS
My fancy sees by love refinedT
A warmer and a dearer charmU
By wedlock's mystic hands entwinedT
A golden coil of wifely caresJ
That years have forged the loving joyV
That guards the curly headed boyV
Asleep an hour ago upstairsJ
-
A fair young mother pure as fairW
A matron heart and virgin soulX
The flickering light that crowns her hairW
Seems like a saintly aureoleX
A tender sense upon me fallsY
That joy unmerited is mineZ
And in this pleasant twilight shineZ
My perfect bliss myself appalsY
-
Come back my darling strayed so farA2
Into the realm of fantasyY
Let thy dear face shine like a starA2
In love light beaming over meY
My melting soul is jealous sweetB2
Of thy long silence' drear eclipseY
O kiss me back with living lipsY
To life love lying at thy feetB2
