How It Happened Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKLK EMFMNOPO EBQBNNNN ARNRSTNT

I pray you pardon me ElsieA
And smile that frown awayB
That dims the light of your lovely faceC
As a thunder cloud the dayB
I really could not help itD
Before I thought 'twas doneE
And those great grey eyes flashed bright and coldF
Like an icicle in the sunE
-
I was thinking of the summersG
When we were boys and girlsH
And wandered in the blossoming woodsI
And the gay winds romped with your curlsH
And you seemed to me the same little girlJ
I kissed in the alder pathK
I kissed the little girl's lips and alasL
I have roused a woman's wrathK
-
There is not so much to pardonE
For why were your lips so redM
The blond hair fell in a shower of goldF
From the proud provoking headM
And the beauty that flashed from the splendid eyesN
And played round the tender mouthO
Rushed over my soul like a warm sweet windP
That blows from the fragrant southO
-
And where after all is the harm doneE
I believe we were made to be gayB
And all of youth not given to loveQ
Is vainly squandered awayB
And strewn through life's low laboursN
Like gold in the desert sandsN
Are love's swift kisses and sighs and vowsN
And the clasp of clinging handsN
-
And when you are old and lonelyA
In Memory's magic shineR
You will see on your thin and wasting handsN
Like gems these kisses of mineR
And when you muse at eveningS
At the sound of some vanished nameT
The ghost of my kisses shall touch your lipsN
And kindle your heart to flameT
