A Triumph Of Order. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHDI JKLK MNMN OPQR SBTB UUVU WSXS DAYA

A squad of regular infantryA
In the Commune's closing daysB
Had captured a crowd of rebelsC
By the wall of Pere la ChaiseB
-
There were desperate men wild womenD
And dark eyed Amazon girlsE
And one little boy with a peach down cheekF
And yellow clustering curlsE
-
The captain seized the little waifG
And said What dost thou hereH
Sapristi Citizen captainD
I'm a Communist my dearI
-
Very well Then you die with the othersJ
Very well That's my affairK
But first let me take to my motherL
Who lives by the wine shop thereK
-
My father's watch You see itM
A gay old thing is it notN
It would please the old lady to have itM
Then I'll come back here and be shotN
-
That is the last we shall see of himO
The grizzled captain grinnedP
As the little man skimmed down the hillQ
Like a swallow down the windR
-
For the joy of killing had lost its zestS
In the glut of those awful daysB
And Death writhed gorged like a greedy snakeT
From the Arch to Pere la ChaiseB
-
But before the last platoon had firedU
The child's shrill voice was heardU
Houp la the old girl made such a rowV
I feared I should break my wordU
-
Against the bullet pitted wallW
He took his place with the restS
A button was lost from his ragged blouseX
Which showed his soft white breastS
-
Now blaze away my childrenD
With your little one two threeA
The Chassepots tore the stout young heartY
And saved SocietyA
