His Friends were very good to him | A |

And slices of delicious Ham | B |
And Chocolate with pink inside | C |
And little Tricycles to ride | C |
And read him Stories through and through | D |
And even took him to the Zoo | D |
But there it was the dreadful Fate | E |
Befell him which I now relate | E |

You know or at least you ought to know | F |

That Children never are allowed | G |
To leave their Nurses in a Crowd | G |
Now this was Jim's especial Foible | H |
He ran away when he was able | H |
And on this inauspicious day | I |
He slipped his hand and ran away | I |
- | |
He hadn't gone a yard when Bang | J |
With open Jaws a lion sprang | J |
And hungrily began to eat | K |
The Boy beginning at his feet | K |
Now just imagine how it feels | L |
When first your toes and then your heels | L |
And then by gradual degrees | M |
Your shins and ankles calves and knees | M |
Are slowly eaten bit by bit | N |
No wonder Jim detested it | N |
No wonder that he shouted Hi | O |
- | |
The Honest Keeper heard his cry | O |
Though very fat he almost ran | P |
To help the little gentleman | Q |
Ponto he ordered as he came | R |
For Ponto was the Lion's name | R |
Ponto he cried with angry Frown | S |
Let go Sir Down Sir Put it down | S |
The Lion made a sudden stop | T |
He let the Dainty Morsel drop | T |
And slunk reluctant to his Cage | U |
Snarling with Disappointed Rage | U |
But when he bent him over Jim | A |
The Honest Keeper's Eyes were dim | A |
The Lion having reached his Head | V |
The Miserable Boy was dead | V |
- | |
When Nurse informed his Parents they | I |
Were more Concerned than I can say | I |
His Mother as She dried her eyes | W |

His Father who was self controlled | X |
Bade all the children round attend | Y |
