The Vigil Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDD EFEFGGDD HIJIIIII IAIAIIII EFEFIIII

England where the sacred flameA
Burns before the inmost shrineB
Where the lips that love thy nameA
Consecrate their hopes and thineB
Where the banners of thy deadC
Weave their shadows overheadC
Watch beside thine arms to nightD
Pray that God defend the RightD
-
Think that when to morrow comesE
War shall claim command of allF
Thou must hear the roll of drumsE
Thou must hear the trumpet's callF
Now before they silence ruthG
Commune with the voice of truthG
England on thy knees to nightD
Pray that God defend the RightD
-
Hast thou counted up the costH
What to foeman what to friendI
Glory sought is Honour lostJ
How should this be knighthood's endI
Know'st thou what is Hatred's meedI
What the surest gain of greedI
England wilt thou dare to nightI
Pray that God defend the RightI
-
Single hearted unafraidI
Hither all thy heroes cameA
On this altar's steps were laidI
Gordon's life and Outram's fameA
England if thy will be yetI
By their great example setI
Here beside thine arms to nightI
Pray that God defend the RightI
-
So shalt thou when morning comesE
Rise to conquer or to fallF
Joyful hear the rolling drumsE
Joyful hear the trumpets callF
Then let Memory tell thy heartI
England what thou wert thou artI
Gird thee with thine ancient mightI
Forth and God defend the RightI
