On The Death Of Mr. Fox Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBC C DDEEFFAAE GGEEEEEEHIC CCJJKKLLMM

The following iiliberal impromptu appeared in a morning papaerA
-
'Our nation's foes lament on Fox's deathB
But bless the hour when PITT resign'd his breathB
These feelings wide let sense and truth unclueC
We give the palm where Justice points its due '-
-
-
To which the author of these pieces sent the following replyC
-
Oh factious viper whose envenom'd toothD
Would mangle still the dead perverting truthD
What though our 'nation's foes' lament the fateE
With generous' feeling of the good and great'E
Shall dastard tongues essay to blast the nameF
Of him whose meed exists in endless fameF
When PITT expired in plenitude of powerA
Though Ilisuccess obscured his dying hourA
Pity her dewy wings before him spreadE
For noble spirits 'war not with the dead '-
His friends in tears a last sad requiem gaveG
As all his errors slumber'd in the graveG
He sunk an Atlas bending 'neath the weightE
Of cares o'erwhelmlng our conflicting stateE
When lo a Hercules in FOX appear'dE
Who for a time the ruin'd fabric rear'dE
He too is fall'n who Britain's loss suppliedE
With him our fast reviving hopes have diedE
Not one great people only raise his urnH
All Europe's far extended regions mournI
'These feelings wide let sense and truth unclueC
To give the palm where Justice points its due '-
Yet let not canker'd Calumny assailC
Or round our statesman wind her gloomy veilC
FOX o'er whose corse a mourning world must weepJ
Whose dear remains in honour'd marble sleepJ
For whom at last e'en hostile nations groanK
While friends and foes alike his talents ownK
FOX shall in Britain's future annals shineL
Nor e'en to PITT the patriot's palm resignL
Which Envy wearing Candour's sacred maskM
For PITT and PITT alone has dared to askM
