Malbrouck the prince of commandersA
Is gone to the war in FlandersA
His fame is like Alexander'sA
But when will he come homeB
-
Perhaps at Trinity Feast orC
Perhaps he may come at EasterD
Egad he had better make haste orC
We fear he may never comeE
-
For Trinity Feast is overD
And has brought no news from DoverD
And Easter is past moreoverD
And Malbrouck still delaysF
-
Milady in her watch towerD
Spends many a pensive hourD
Not well knowing why or how herD
Dear lord from England staysF
-
While sitting quite forlorn inG
That tower she spies returningH
A page clad in deep mourningH
With fainting steps and slowI
-
O page prithee come fasterD
What news do you bring of your masterD
I fear there is some disasterD
Your looks are so full of woeI
-
The news I bring fair ladyJ
With sorrowful accent said heJ
Is one you are not readyJ
So soon alas to hearK
-
But since to speak I'm hurriedL
Added this page quite flurriedL
Malbrouck is dead and buriedL
And here he shed a tearM
-
He's dead he's dead as a herringH
For I beheld his 'berring '-
And four officers transferringH
His corpse away from the fieldN
-
One officer carried his sabreD
And he carried it not without labourO
Much envying his next neighbourO
Who only bore a shieldN
-
The third was helmet bearerO
That helmet which on its wearerO
Filled all who saw with terrorO
And covered a hero's brainsP
-
Now having got so far IQ
Find that by the Lord HarryO
The fourth is left nothing to carryO
So there the thing remainsP
