Gray earth gray mist gray skyA
Through vapors hurrying byA
Larger than wont on highA
Floats the horned yellow moonB
Chill airs are faintly stirredC
And far away is heardC
Of some fresh awakened birdC
The querulous shrill tuneB
-
The dark mist hides the faceD
Of the dim land no traceD
Of rock or river's placeD
In the thick air is drawnE
But dripping grass smells sweetF
And rustling branches meetF
And sounding water greetF
The slow sure sacred dawnE
-
Past is the long black nightG
With its keen lightnings whiteG
Thunder and floods new lightG
The glimmering low east streaksH
The dense clouds part betweenI
Their jagged rents are seenI
Pale reaches blue and greenI
As the mirk curtain breaksJ
-
Above the shadowy worldK
Still more and more unfurledK
The gathered mists upcurledK
Like phantoms melt and passL
In clear obscure revealedK
Brown wood gray stream dark fieldK
Fresh healthy odors yieldK
Wet furrows flowers and grassL
-
The sudden splendid gleamM
Of one thin golden beamM
Shoots from the feathered rimN
Of yon hill crowned with woodsO
Down its embowered sideK
As living waters slideK
So the great morning tideK
Follows in sunny floodsP
-
From bush and hedge and treeQ
Joy unrestrained and freeQ
Breaks forth in melodyQ
Twitter and chirp and songR
Alive the festal airS
With gauze winged creatures fairS
That flicker everywhereS
Dart poise and flash alongR
-
The shining mists are goneE
Slight films of gold swift blownT
Before the strong bright sunU
Or the deep colored skyA
A world of life and glowV
Sparkles and basks belowV
Where the soft meads a rowV
Hoary with dew fall lieA
-
Does not the morn break thusW
Swift bright victoriousW
With new skies cleared for usW
Over the soul storm tostQ
Her night was long and deepX
Strange visions vexed her sleepX
Strange sorrows bade her weepX
Her faith in dawn was lostQ
-
No halt no rest for herY
The immortal wandererY
From sphere to higher sphereZ
Toward the pure source of dayQ
The new light shames her fearsA2
Her faithlessness her tearsB2
As the new sun appearsA2
To light her godlike wayQ
