The big bright Moon hung high and roundA
In a densely darkened skyB
The tall pines swayed and mocked and groanedC
The mountains grew so highB
That the Man in the Moon came out and saidD
Ho Spooks for a merry danceE
The winds blow hard the caverns roarF
While o'er the earth they pranceE
-
-
-
A Witch and a Goblin led the spritesE
Out from the sky they sprungG
And down the milky way they slidH
And over a chasm swungG
The streams around ran witches' brothI
The fumes were strong and rankJ
These Elfin creatures all were wrothI
While of the stuff they drankJ
-
-
-
The cunning Moon looked on and laughedK
With a shrill and sneering jibeL
Her soul grew fat to see them chaffedK
This mad and elfish tribeL
The big black caldron boiled so highB
With food for these queer mitesE
That it lit the world throughout the skyB
And down came all the SpritesE
-
-
-
Their mad career upset a starM
As through the air they flewN
It cringed in fear and shot afarM
And fell where no one knewN
Orion's sword was broke in bitsE
Corona's crown was goneO
Capella seemed to lose her witsE
While all so longed for dawnO
-
-
-
Then from the night there came a soundK
Of sleigh bells ringing sweetK
Out of the chaos came a manP
Kris Kringle for his Christmas treatK
Ho Kris they cried We'll have some funQ
We'll bind the old man downR
We'll tie him up and toss him o'erS
Into our Goblin townR
-
-
-
They climbed the sleigh with shout and dinT
To bind his hands and feetK
A hundred strong they clambered inT
Our good old Kris to meetK
He sat quite still with twinkling eyesE
Then seized his mystic wandK
He raised it up and waved it roundK
Stilled was this chattering bandK
-
-
-
Stiffly stark and still they stoodK
Clad in elfish clothesE
Some were wax and some were woodK
One had crushed his noseE
Playthings rare he said and smiledK
For children rich and poorU
Some I'll leave the crippled childK
And some at the orphan's doorF
-
-
-
-
He shook his reins and called his steedK
To bear him swiftly onV
Full well it knew its Master's needK
To hurry e'er the dawnO
From house to house they scampered downR
Their sleigh bells ringing clearW
Through chimneys in the sleepy townR
Good Kris and his reindeerW
-
-
-
The windows rattled the moonbeams tattledK
A tale so strange and queerW
They told how at night in dire affrightK
The Moon had hid in fearW
-
-
-
That he'd called in sport his elfish courtK
Of spooks and witches gayX
Each Elfin child by glee beguiledK
Brought scores of others they sayX
-
Then a man appeared with flowing beardK
In a sled with a reindeer fleetK
They gathered about with din and shoutK
To bind him hands and feetK
-
-
-
Then the Moon laughed loud at the gathering crowdK
While he held his sides in mirthI
To see old Kris in a plight like thisE
Toiling o'er the earthI
-
-
-
-
But alas for the Moon he had laughed like a loonY
For Kris is a hero of oldK
Yes Kris is a seer with his small reindeerW
He captured the Goblins boldK
-
And he changed them they say in a wonderful wayX
To toys for his Christmas cheerW
The big dolls stare with a goblin airZ
The small ones cringe with fearW
-
-
-
-
While the moonbeams prattle I hear a rattleA2
Of hoofs on the chimney sideK
Then out on the snow I gaze belowB2
Hurrah it's Kris Kringle I criedK
-
Then sly as a mouse he entered the houseE
And hung up his treasures so gayX
Then out with a dash he sped like a flashC2
Into the night and awayX
