Ah know ye not in IsraelA
A prince is fallen to dayB
A just man from the ills to comeC
In mercy called awayB
-
The Church is clothed in mourningD
Who shall supply her lossE
A standard bearer's quit the fieldF
A soldier of the crossE
-
On mission high and holyG
He braved the watery mainH
And many a faithful heart rejoicedI
To welcome him againJ
-
Thrice had the veteran warriorK
Nobly forsaken allL
And trod our western wildernessM
Obedient to His callL
-
Whose voice he knew from childhoodN
And followed where it ledO
For perfect love reigned over himP
And banished fear and dreadO
-
Meekly he journeyed onwardQ
Unmoved by praise or blameR
The mark was always kept in viewS
And steady was his aimR
-
Unfaltering trust in JesusM
Had ever nerved his armT
He knew His shield of love was nearU
Protecting him from harmT
-
Like Paul he went from house to houseV
And boldly preached the wordQ
And many souls accepting itW
Were gathered to the LordX
-
While from his heart and from his lipsY
As onward he would passZ
Fell gentle benedictionsZ
As showers upon the grassZ
-
Nor from the galling chains of sinA2
Alone he sought to freeG
However named the bondsman claimedB2
His whole souled sympathyG
-
Bending beneath a weight of careC2
A pilgrimage of yearsZ
Before the rulers of the landD2
Behold him plead with tearsZ
-
For poor down trodden AfricaE2
He lifts his latest breathF2
And with her name upon his lipsZ
Sinks in the arms of deathF2
-
Thoughts of the distant and the lovedG2
Came thronging to his heartH2
He felt 'twere sweet to be with themI2
Yet sweeter to departH2
-
Better to go and be with ChristJ2
Were the blest words he saidO
Then in the midst of bonds and chainsZ
The enfranchised spirit fledO
-
And in a far off stranger landD2
Near Holston's billowy waveK2
A voice is calling silentlyG
From that lone martyr's graveK2
-
Oppressor list its meaningD
It is to thee it callsZ
Ah heed the solemn warning voiceZ
Before the judgment fallsZ
-
It tells thee that a martyr's prayersZ
Are heard in highest HeavenL2
That soon the shackles of the slaveK2
In mercy shall be rivenL2
-
God will avenge his own electM2
Who are groaning to be freeG
His promises are sure He willN2
Avenge them speedilyG
-
But where will be the oppressorK
In that soul searching dayB
When perfect truth and equityG
Have undivided swayB
-
Quailing before the majestyG
Of the Omniscient OneL2
Dealers in slaves and souls of menJ
Will feel their work is doneL2
-
And bowed beneath that word of GodO2
Which pierces like a swordX
Call on the rocks to hide themI2
From the presence of the LordX
-
But Mercy's voice is whisperingD
Immanuel died to saveK2
And he designs rich fruit shall springD
From that lone martyr's graveK2
