When darkness over Egypt reignedA
A darkness to be feltB
Light sweetly shone round Goshen stillC
The tents where Israel dweltB
-
Awestruck the Egyptians silent layD
They rose not from their placeE
God's finger had been o'er their landF
And left a fearful traceE
-
The very idols which they servedG
A gloom around them threwH
The stream they worshipped turned to bloodI
The sun his light withdrewH
-
But Pharaoh's heart was hardened stillC
He let not Israel goJ
Until Jehovah King of kingsK
Struck the last fearful blowJ
-
The first born on the kingly throneL
The first born in the hallM
God sent his awful mandate forthN
And death passed over allM
-
No house remained in this proud landF
Which mourned not for its deadO
And every street was filled with gloomP
And every heart with dreadO
-
At midnight was the message sentQ
It was an awful hourR
Proclaiming man's impotencyK
And God's eternal powerR
-
The mighty monarch struck with aweS
Dismissed the people thenT
Contending with OmnipotenceK
He felt indeed was vainU
-
And how were Israel employedV
When light around them shoneL
They then prepared the paschal lambW
And stood with sandals onX
-
Staves in their hands loins girded tooH
They waited the commandF
To throw their loosened shackles offY
And seek the promised landF
-
But first they ate the passoverR
And freely sprinkled roundZ
The blood of an unblemished lambW
In whom no spot was foundZ
-
And the destroying angel passedA2
Harmless o'er every doorB2
Whose side posts and whose lintels tooH
Faith's striking symbol boreB2
-
Now let us pause and ask our heartsK
If we have aught to learnC2
If very many teaching thingsK
We cannot here discernC2
-
Is there not darkness to be feltB
In Egypt at this hourR
And does she not refuse to bowD2
Before Jehovah's powerR
-
And oh when God's own IsraelE2
Would break the oppressor's chainU
Does she approach His sacred throneL
And supplicate in vainU
-
Ah no upon the captive stillC
Is poured a flood of lightF2
While he prepares for better worldsK
To take his joyous flightF2
-
His bonds are burst he only waitsK
The omnipotent commandF
To journey forth his armor's onX
His staff within his handF
-
Not settled down in carnal easeK
This world is not his homeG2
A pilgrim and a stranger hereH2
He seeks for one to comeI2
-
Christ is his holy passoverR
He has a part in HimJ2
For he applies his blood in faithK2
To purify from sinL2
-
But oh with very bitter herbsK
It must be eaten stillC
Suffering is yet the lot of thoseK
Who do their Master's willC
-
And let the Christian not forgetM2
Israel was bid to stayD
Within the shelter of the tentQ
Until the opening dayD
-
And God is now his people's tentQ
In Him may we abideN2
Then though the faith will oft be provedO2
The patience oft be triedN2
-
An hour of sweet release will comeI2
And all the pilgrim bandF
By flame and cloud alternate ledO
Attain the promised landF
-
And wearing there the crown of joyP2
And carrying too the palmQ2
Eternally ascribe the praiseK
To God and to the LambW
