When rainbow hues of closing dayA
O'er evening's portals faintly playA
The Alpine horn calls far awayA
Praised be the LordB
-
And every hill and rock aroundC
As though they loved the grateful soundC
Send back 'mid solitudes profoundC
Praised be the LordB
-
O God has man so thankless grownD
He brings no anthems to thy throneD
When voiceless things have found a toneD
To praise the LordB
-
Ah no for see the shepherds comeE
Though hardly heard the welcome homeF
From toil of day they quickly comeE
To worship GodG
-
The look that taught their hearts to bowH
And childhood's laugh and sunny browH
All all by them forgotten nowH
In praise to GodG
-
Kneeling the starry vault beneathI
With spirits free as air they breatheJ
Oh pure should be their votive wreathI
Of praise to GodG
-
How glorious such a scene must beK
When prayer and praise ascend to TheeK
In one glad voice of melodyK
Eternal LordB
-
All space thy temple and the airL
A viewless messenger to bearL
Creation's holy vesper prayerL
On wings to HeavenM
-
Oh that for me some Alpine hornN
Both closing eve and wak'ning mornN
Would sound and bid my bosom scornN
The world's vain joysO
-
Its treasured idols all resignP
That when Life's cheating hues declineP
The one undying thought be mineP
To praise the LordB
