Thou art come from the spirits' land thou birdA
Thou art come from the spirits' landB
Through the dark pine grove let thy voice be heardA
And tell of the shadowy bandB
-
-
-
But tell us thou bird of the solemn strainC
Can those who have loved forgetD
We call and they answer not againE
Do they love do they love us yetD
-
F HEMANSF
-
Yes yes I have come from the spirits' landB
From the land that is bright and fairG
I come with a voice from the shadowy bandB
To tell that they love you thereG
-
To say if a wish or a fond regretD
Could live in Elysian bowersF
'Twould be for the friends they could ne'er forgetD
The loved of their youthful hoursF
-
To whisper the dear deserted bandB
Who smiled on their tarriance hereH
That a faithful guard in the dreamless landB
Are the friends they have loved so dearI
-
They have gone to be seen of men no moreJ
But oft on a shadowy hillK
Or the crest of a wave where the moonbeams pourJ
They are watching around you stillK
-
And oft on a fleecy cloud they sailL
And oft on the hurrying blastM
When slumber her light and magic veilL
O'er man and his woes has castM
-
'Tis true in the silent night you callN
And they answer you not againE
For the spirits of bliss are voiceless allN
Sound only was made for painC
-
That their land is bright and they weep no moreJ
I have warbled from hill to hillK
But my plaintive strains should have told beforeJ
They love oh they love you stillK
-
They bid me say that unfading flowersF
You'll find in the path they trodO
And a welcome true to their deathless bowersF
Pronounced by the voice of GodO
