The accuser of the brethrenA
How fitting is the nameB
Since the creation of the worldC
His business is the sameB
-
Bringing false accusationsD
Sowing the seeds of strifeE
Watching the halting of the saintsF
And striking at the lifeE
-
If with the aspersed one he should failG
The asperser's sure to fallH
For losing Christian charityI
Have we not lost our allH
-
Ye know not vain contendersJ
What spirit ye are ofK
Alas ye are weak defendersJ
Of the faith that works by loveK
-
Which purifies the feelingsL
And makes all sweet withinM
Tenders the heart before the LordN
And keeps the spirit cleanO
-
Go and adorn the doctrineA
Ye are feigning to approveP
And seek for strength to follow HimQ
Whose first best name is LoveK
-
But cease from defamationA
The poet says 'tis worseR
To steal his reputationA
Than rob him of his purseR
-
Look home look home defamersR
There's business there for youS
Weed well your own deceitful heartsR
You'll find enough to doS
-
Perhaps that God before whose glanceR
Each soul unveiled appearsR
Sees that thy brother's work is doneA
While thine is in arrearsR
-
Then leave ah leave the little moteT
Which thou and thou aloneU
Mark'st in his eye and take awayV
The beam that blinds thine ownU
-
Thou hast had much yea much forgivenA
Then is it just and rightW
From him who is thy fellow wormX
To exact the utmost miteW
-
Judge not the blessed Jesus saidY
Judgment is mine aloneU
He only who has never sinnedZ
Should dare to cast a stoneU
-
But love thy neighbor as thyselfK
His friend his helper beI
And show that mercy unto himQ
Which God has shown to theeI
