When the Norn Mother saw the Whirlwind HourA
Greatening and darkening as it hurried onB
She left the Heaven of Heroes and came downC
To make a man to meet the mortal needD
She took the tried clay of the common roadE
Clay warm yet with the genial heat of EarthF
Dashed through it all a strain of prophecyG
Tempered the heap with thrill of human tearsH
Then mixed a laughter with the serious stuffI
Into the shape she breathed a flame to lightJ
That tender tragic ever changing faceK
Here was a man to hold against the worldL
A man to match the mountains and the seaG
-
The color of the ground was in him the red earthF
The smack and tang of elemental thingsM
The rectitude and patience of the cliffN
The good will of the rain that loves all leavesO
The friendly welcome of the wayside wellP
The courage of the bird that dares the seaG
The gladness of the wind that shakes the cornQ
The pity of the snow that hides all scarsR
The secrecy of streams that make their wayS
Beneath the mountain to the rifted rockT
The tolerance and equity of lightJ
That gives as freely to the shrinking flowerA
As to the great oak flaring to the windU
To the grave's low hill as to the MatterhornQ
That shoulders out the skyV
-
Sprung from the WestW
The strength of virgin forests braced his mindU
The hush of spacious prairies stilled his soulX
Up from log cabin to the CapitolY
One fire was on his spirit one resolveZ
To send the keen ax to the root of wrongA2
Clearing a free way for the feet of GodB2
And evermore he burned to do his deedD
With the fine stroke and gesture of a kingC2
He built the rail pile as he built the StateD2
Pouring his splendid strength through every blowE2
The conscience of him testing every strokeF2
To make his deed the measure of a manQ
-
So came the Captain with the mighty heartG2
And when the judgment thunders split the houseH2
Wrenching the rafters from their ancient restW
He held the ridgepole up and spiked againQ
The rafters of the Home He held his placeK
Held the long purpose like a growing treeG
Held on through blame and faltered not at praiseI2
And when he fell in whirlwind he went downQ
As when a lordly cedar green with boughsJ2
Goes down with a great shout upon the hillsK2
And leaves a lonesome place against the skyV
