To Clara Morris Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE EEEE FGFG HEHE HIHI EEEE HEHE

In days gone by the poets wroteA
Sweet verses to the ladies fairB
Described the nightingale's clear noteA
Or penned an Ode to Daphne's hairB
-
To dare all for a woman's smileC
Or breathe one's heart out in a roseD
Such trifles now are out of styleC
The scented manuscript must closeE
-
Yet Villon wrote his roundelaysE
And that sweet singer HoraceE
But I will sing of other daysE
In praise of Clara MorrisE
-
Youth is but the joy of lifeF
Not the eternal mopingG
We get no happiness from strifeF
Nor yet by blindly gropingG
-
All the world's a stage you knowH
The men and women actorsE
A little joy a little woeH
These are but human factorsE
-
The mellow days still come and goH
The earth is full of beautyI
If we would only think it soH
Life is not all a dutyI
-
And you are young in heart not yearsE
Is this not true becauseE
You mingle happiness with tearsE
And do not look for flawsE
-
Your silver hair is but the snowH
That drifts above the rosesE
And though the years may come and goH
They can but scatter posiesE
