The IncubusA
-
-
The way was dark within the gloomy church yardB
As I wandered through the woodland near the streamC
With slow and heavy treadD
Through a city of the deadD
When suddenly I heard a dreadful screamC
-
My heart gave frantic leap as when the roebuckE
Is started by the clamor of the chaseA
And I halted all atrembleF
In the vain hope to dissembleF
Or cloak the leaden pallor on my faceA
-
'Twas in the ghostly month of grim DecemberG
The frozen winds were bitter in their cryH
And I muttered half aloudI
To that white and silent crowdI
'Tis a somber month to live in or to dieH
-
And then as if in answer to my whisperG
Came a voice of some foul fiend from HellF
No longer live say IH
'Tis better far to dieH
And let the falling snow flakes sound the knellF
-
Perched upon a tombstone sat the creatureG
Grewsome as an unquenched burning lustJ
Sitting livid thereK
With an open coffin stareK
A stare that seemed the mocking of the justJ
-
And in my thoughts the dreadful thing is sittingL
Sitting there with eyelids red and blearK
And see it there I willF
'Til my restless soul is stillF
And the earth clods roll and rumble on my bierK
