IA
In the greenest of our valleysB
By good angels tenantedC
Once fair and stately palaceD
Radiant palace reared its headC
In the monarch Thought's dominionE
It stood thereF
Never seraph spread a pinionE
Over fabric half so fairF
-
IIA
Banners yellow glorious goldenE
On its roof did float and flowG
This all this was in the oldenE
Time long agoG
And every gentle air that dalliedC
In that sweet dayC
Along the ramparts plumed and pallidC
A winged odour went awayC
-
IIIA
Wanderers in that happy valleyH
Through two luminous windows sawI
Spirits moving musicallyH
To a lute's well tuned lawI
Round about a throne where sittingJ
PorphyrogeneE
In state his glory well befittingJ
The ruler of the realm was seenE

And all with pearl and ruby glowingJ
Was the fair palace doorL
Through which came flowing flowing flowingJ
And sparkling evermoreL
A troop of Echoes whose sweet dutyH
Was but to singJ
In voices of surpassing beautyH
The wit and wisdom of their kingJ
-
VH
But evil things in robes of sorrowG
Assailed the monarch's high estateC
Ah let us mourn for never morrowG
Shall dawn upon him desolateC
And round about his home the gloryH
That blushed and bloomedC
Is but a dim remembered storyH
Of the old time entombedC
-
VIK
And travelers now within that valleyH
Through the red litten windows seeH
Vast forms that move fantasticallyH
To a discordant melodyH
While like a rapid ghastly riverM
Through the pale doorL
A hideous throng rush out foreverM
And laugh but smile no moreL
