When Day Is Done Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGAAHH FFIIJJ BBKKDD

When day is done and the night slips downA
And I've turned my back on the busy townA
And come once more to the welcome gateB
Where the roses nod and the children waitB
I tell myself as I see them smileC
That life is good and its tasks worth whileC
-
When day is done and I've come once moreD
To my quiet street and the friendly doorD
Where the Mother reigns and the children playE
And the kettle sings in the old time wayE
I throw my coat on a near by chairF
And say farewell to my pack of careF
-
When day is done all the hurt and strifeG
And the selfishness and the greed of lifeG
Are left behind in the busy townA
I've ceased to worry about renownA
Or gold or fame and I'm just a dadH
Content to be with his girl and ladH
-
Whatever the day has brought of careF
Here love and laughter are mine to shareF
Here I can claim what the rich desireI
Rest and peace by a ruddy fireI
The welcome words which the loved ones speakJ
And the soft caress of a baby's cheekJ
-
When day is done and I reach my gateB
I come to a realm where there is no hateB
For here whatever my worth may beK
Are those who cling to their faith in meK
And with love on guard at my humble doorD
I have all that the world has struggled forD
