The Willing Horse Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCCDEEED FGFGHHHIJJJI HHHHKKKAHHHAI'd rather be the willing horse that people ride to death | A |
Than be the proud and haughty steed that children dare not touch | B |
I'd rather haul a merry pack and finish out of breath | A |
Than never leave the barn to toil because I'm worth too much | B |
So boast your noble pedigrees | C |
And talk of manners if you please | C |
The weary horse enjoys his ease | C |
When all his work is done | D |
The willing horse day in and out | E |
Can hear the merry children shout | E |
And every time they are about | E |
He shares in all their fun | D |
- | |
I want no guards beside my door to pick and choose my friends for me | F |
I would not be shut off from men as is the fancy steed | G |
I do not care when I go by that no one turns his eyes to see | F |
The dashing manner of my gait which marks my noble breed | G |
I am content to trudge the road | H |
And willingly to draw my load | H |
Sometimes to know the spur and goad | H |
When I begin to lag | I |
I'd rather feel the collar jerk | J |
And tug at me the while I work | J |
Than all the tasks of life to shirk | J |
As does the stylish nag | I |
- | |
So let me be the willing horse that now and then is overtasked | H |
Let me be one the children love and freely dare to ride | H |
I'd rather be the gentle steed of which too much is sometimes asked | H |
Than be the one that never knows the youngsters at his side | H |
So drive me wheresoe'er you will | K |
On level road or up the hill | K |
Pile on my back the burdens still | K |
And run me out of breath | A |
In love and friendship day by day | H |
And kindly words I'll take my pay | H |
A willing horse that is the way | H |
I choose to meet my death | A |
