The Silver Stripes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJEKE LMNMOEPE AQFQLERE

When we've honored the heroes returning from FranceA
When we've mourned for the heroes who fellB
When we've done all we can for the home coming manC
Who stood to the shot and the shellB
Let us all keep in mind those who lingered behindD
The thousands who waited to goE
The brave and the true who did all they could doF
Yet have only the silver to showE
-
They went from their homes at the summons for menG
They drilled in the heat of the sunH
They fell into line with a pluck that was fineI
Each cheerfully shouldered a gunH
They were ready to die for Old Glory on highJ
They were eager to meet with the foeE
They were just like the rest of our bravest and bestK
Though they've only the silver to showE
-
Their bodies stayed here but their spirits were thereL
And the men who looked death in the faceM
For the cause had no fear for they knew waiting hereN
There were many to fill up each placeM
Oh the ships came and went till the battle was spentO
And the tyrant went down with the blowE
Yet he still might have reigned but for those who remainedP
And have only the silver to showE
-
So here's to the soldiers who never saw FranceA
And here's to the boys unafraidQ
Let us give them their due they were glorious tooF
And it isn't their fault that they stayedQ
They were eager to share in the sacrifice thereL
Let them share in the peace that we knowE
For we know they were brave by the service they gaveR
Though they've only the silver to showE
