'Oh if only I had known 'A
Said the keeper of the innB
'But no hint to me was shownC
And I didn't let them inB
-
'Yes a star gleamed overheadD
But I couldn't read the skiesE
And I'd given every bedD
To the very rich and wiseE
-
'And she was so poorly cladF
And he hadn't much to sayG
But no room for them I hadF
So I ordered them awayG
-
'She seemed tired and it was lateH
And they begged so hard that II
Feeling sorry for her stateH
In the stable let them lieI
-
'Had I turned some rich man outJ
Just to make a place for themK
'Twould have killed beyond a doubtJ
All my trade at BethlehemK
-
'Then there came the wise men threeL
To the stable with the mornM
Who announced they'd come to seeL
The great King who had been bornM
-
'And they brought Him gifts of myrrhN
Costly frankincense and goldO
And a great light shone on herN
In the stable bleak and coldO
-
'All my patrons now are deadD
And forgotten but to dayG
All the world to peace is ledD
By the ones I sent awayG
-
'It was my unlucky fateH
To be born that Inn to ownC
Against Christ I shut my gateH
Oh if only I had known '-
