The Furnace Door Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDECFFGHIIHH JJKLMMNLOOIHPPIH QQRHSSN TTUVHHWMy father is a peaceful man | A |
He tries in every way he can | A |
To live a life of gentleness | B |
And patience all the while | C |
He says that needless fretting's vain | D |
That it's absurd to be profane | D |
That nearly every wrong can be | E |
Adjusted with a smile | C |
Yet try no matter how he will | F |
There's one thing that annoys him still | F |
One thing that robs him of his calm | G |
And leaves him very sore | H |
He cannot keep his self control | I |
When with a shovel full of coal | I |
He misses where it's headed for | H |
And hits the furnace door | H |
- | |
He measures with a careful eye | J |
The space for which he's soon to try | J |
Then grabs his trusty shovel up | K |
And loads it in the bin | L |
Then turns and with a healthy lunge | M |
That's two parts swing and two parts plunge | M |
He lets go at the furnace fire | N |
Convinced it will go in | L |
And then we hear a sudden smack | O |
The cellar air turns blue and black | O |
Above the rattle of the coal | I |
We hear his awful roar | H |
From dreadful language upward hissed | P |
We know that father's aim has missed | P |
And that his shovel full of coal | I |
Went up against the door | H |
- | |
The minister was here one day | Q |
For supper and Pa went away | Q |
To fix the furnace fire and soon | R |
We heard that awful roar | H |
And through the furnace pipes there came | S |
Hot words that made Ma blush for shame | S |
'It strikes me ' said the minister | N |
'He hit the furnace door ' | - |
Ma turned away and hung her head | T |
'I'm so ashamed ' was all she said | T |
And then the minister replied | U |
'Don't worry I admit | V |
That when I hit the furnace door | H |
And spill the coal upon the floor | H |
I quite forget the cloth I wear | W |
And er swear a little bit ' | - |
