My father is a peaceful manA
He tries in every way he canA
To live a life of gentlenessB
And patience all the whileC
He says that needless fretting's vainD
That it's absurd to be profaneD
That nearly every wrong can beE
Adjusted with a smileC
Yet try no matter how he willF
There's one thing that annoys him stillF
One thing that robs him of his calmG
And leaves him very soreH
He cannot keep his self controlI
When with a shovel full of coalI
He misses where it's headed forH
And hits the furnace doorH
-
He measures with a careful eyeJ
The space for which he's soon to tryJ
Then grabs his trusty shovel upK
And loads it in the binL
Then turns and with a healthy lungeM
That's two parts swing and two parts plungeM
He lets go at the furnace fireN
Convinced it will go inL
And then we hear a sudden smackO
The cellar air turns blue and blackO
Above the rattle of the coalI
We hear his awful roarH
From dreadful language upward hissedP
We know that father's aim has missedP
And that his shovel full of coalI
Went up against the doorH
-
The minister was here one dayQ
For supper and Pa went awayQ
To fix the furnace fire and soonR
We heard that awful roarH
And through the furnace pipes there cameS
Hot words that made Ma blush for shameS
'It strikes me ' said the ministerN
'He hit the furnace door '-
Ma turned away and hung her headT
'I'm so ashamed ' was all she saidT
And then the minister repliedU
'Don't worry I admitV
That when I hit the furnace doorH
And spill the coal upon the floorH
I quite forget the cloth I wearW
And er swear a little bit '-
