The Flag Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFGHBHB IJIJKLKL

We never knew how much the FlagA
Could mean until he went awayB
We used to boast of it and bragA
As something of a by gone dayB
But now the Flag can start our tearsC
In moments of our greatest joyD
Old Glory in the sky appearsE
The symbol of our little boyD
-
We knew that sometimes people weptF
To see the Flag go waving byG
But never guessed the griefs they keptF
We never understood just whyG
But now our eyes grow quickly dimH
Our voices choke with sobs to dayB
The Flag is telling us of himH
Our little boy who's gone awayB
-
We never knew the Flag could beI
So much a part of human lifeJ
We thought it beautiful to seeI
Before these bitter days of strifeJ
But now more beautiful it gleamsK
And deeper in our hearts it dwellsL
It is the emblem of our dreamsK
For of our little boy it tellsL
