Worse than the fight for a hoard of pelf | A |
Is the fight to master our vices small | B |
Worse than the fight on the battle line | C |
Is the struggle that many a man goes through | D |
To rid himself of the thirst for wine | C |
That he may live as he wants to do | D |

Temptation knocks at the good priest's door | E |
And fierce is the struggle within his breast | F |
But he kneels and prays till the siege is o'er | G |
And rises a victor in the test | F |
And man and woman must fight as he | H |
The things of self that would drag us down | I |
And over ourselves get the mastery | H |
Else all we gain is a paper crown | I |

Oh the fight for wealth and the fight for fame | J |
The fight for glory and world applause | K |
The struggle too for an honored name | J |
And I 'd list the fight for a noble cause | L |
Are simple things if the truth were known | M |

To live a life that is clean and true | D |
