d in on him last night t' chatA
Of politics an' this an' thatA
An' when he'd showed me to a seatB
He brung some apples in t' eatB
An' tuk one up an' stroked its sideC
An' fondled it t' show his prideC
Says I t' him 'It's plain t' meD
Thet things ain't what they orter beD
Men ain't as honest as they wuzE
Vice profits more'n virtue doesE
The weak are downtrod by the strongF
The whole world's overrun by wrong 'G
An' then I showed him facts t' proveH
Thet we air gettin' in a grooveH
O' wickedness an' steeped in sinI
But all he did wuz work his chinI
A chewin' on his apple coreJ
An' lookin' at his parlor floorJ
An' then says he right slow t' meD
'Some things ain't what they orter beD
But still I ain't inclined to pineK
Apples this year air mighty fine 'G
-
He tuk another pippin thenL
An' started in t' chew againL
'Now Eb ' says I 'Ye've got t' sayE
Thet we air in a dreadful wayE
Thet life is full o' pain an' woeM
An' rough air roads thet we must goM
The iron heels of lust and greedN
Air on our necks an' if you readO
The papers nowadays you'll noteP
Thet rumors dreadful air afloatP
Our judges ain't exactly justQ
In matters that affect a trust '-
I put it to him good an' strongF
-
Expectin' that he'd come erlongF
An' jine with me by nod or signK
But nary nod or move t' jineK
He made but turnin' in his chairR
An' reachin' fer the table whereR
An old brown pitcher stood says heD
'Come on an' have a drink with meD
I ain't denyin' what you sayE
It mebbe things air thatawayM
But here's yer glass now ain't that clearS
The cider's mighty fine this year '-
