The man in factory or shop | E |
Who rises quickly to the top | E |
Is he who gives what can't be bought | F |
Intelligent and careful thought | G |
- | |
No one can say just when begins | H |
The service that promotion wins | H |
Or when it ends 'tis not denned | G |
By certain hours or any kind | G |
Of system that has been devised | G |
Merit cannot be systemized | G |
It is at work when it's at play | I |
It serves each minute of the day | I |
'Tis always at its post to see | J |
New ways of help and use to be | J |
Merit from duty never slinks | J |
Its cardinal virtue is it thinks | J |
- | |
Promotion comes to him who tries | J |
Not solely for a selfish prize | J |
But day by day and year by year | K |
Holds his employer's interests dear | K |
Who measures not by what he earns | J |
The sum of labor he returns | J |
Nor counts his day of toiling through | L |
Till he's done all that he can do | L |
His strength is not of muscle bred | G |
But of the heart and of the head | G |
The man who would the top attain | M |
Must demonstrate he has a brain | M |
