Mothers' Excuses Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFEFGHGHBIBDJJJ KLMNOPQPDBKBRNFLMJSJ

Mother for me made excusesA
When I was a little ladB
Found some reason for my conductC
When it had been very badB
Blamed it on a recent illnessD
Or my nervousness and toldE
Father to be easy with meF
Every time he had to scoldE
And I knew as well as anyF
Roguish healthy lad of tenG
Mother really wasn't tellingH
Truthful things to father thenG
I knew I deserved the whippingH
Knew that I'd been very badB
Knew that mother knew it alsoI
When she intervened with dadB
I knew that my recent illnessD
Hadn't anything to doJ
With the mischief I'd been up toJ
And I knew that mother knewJ
But remembering my feverK
And my nervous temperamentL
Father put away the shingleM
And postponed the sad eventN
Now his mother when I threatenO
Punishment for this and thatP
Calls to mind the dreary night hoursQ
When beside his bed we satP
Comes and tells me that he's nervousD
That's the reason he was badB
And the boy and doting motherK
Put it over on the dadB
Some day when he's grown as I amR
With a boy on mischief bentN
He will hear the timeworn storyF
Of the nervous temperamentL
And remembering the shingleM
That aside I always threwJ
All I hope is that he'll let themS
Put it over on him tooJ
