Lost Opportunities Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEF BBGGHHIIJJ AAKKLLJJEE MMNNOPLLKK

'When I am rich ' he used to sayA
'A thousand joys I'll give awayA
I'll walk among the poor I findB
And unto one and all be kindB
I'll place a wreath of roses redC
Upon the bier of all my deadC
I'll help the struggling youth to climbD
In doing good I'll spend my timeD
To all in need I'll friendly beE
The day that fortune smiles on me 'F
-
He never guessed that being kindB
Depends upon the heart and mindB
And not upon the purse at allG
That poor men's gifts however smallG
Make light some weary traveler's loadH
And smooth for him his troubled roadH
He never knew or understoodI
The fellowship of doing goodI
Because he had not much to spareJ
He thought it vain to give his shareJ
-
Yet many passed him day by dayA
He might have helped along the wayA
He fancied kindness something whichK
Belongs entirely to the richK
And so he lived and toiled for goldL
Unsympathetic harsh and coldL
Intending all the time to shareJ
The burdens that his brothers bearJ
When he possessed great wealth and heE
Could well afford a friend to beE
-
His fortune came but oh too lateM
The poor about him could not waitM
They never guessed and never knewN
The things that he had meant to doN
Few knew how much he'd planned to giveO
If God had only let him liveP
And when at last his form was coldL
All that he'd left on earth was goldL
A kindly name is something whichK
A man must earn before he's richK
