Hard Knocks Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGDGD HIHIJDJD

I'm not the man to say that failure's sweetA
Nor tell a chap to laugh when things go wrongB
I know it hurts to have to take defeatA
An' no one likes to lose before a throngB
It isn't very pleasant not to winC
When you have done the very best you couldD
But if you're down get up an' buckle inC
A lickin' often does a fellow goodD
-
I've seen some chaps who never knew their powerE
Until somebody knocked 'em to the floorF
I've known men who discovered in an hourE
A courage they had never shown beforeF
I've seen 'em rise from failure to the topG
By doin' things they hadn't understoodD
Before the day disaster made 'em dropG
A lickin' often does a fellow goodD
-
Success is not the teacher wise an' trueH
That gruff old failure is remember thatI
She's much too apt to make a fool of youH
Which isn't true of blows that knock you flatI
Hard knocks are painful things an' hard to bearJ
An' most of us would dodge 'em if we couldD
There's something mighty broadening in careJ
A lickin' often does a fellow goodD
