Green apple time an' Oh the joyA
Once more to be a healthy boyA
Casting a longin' greedy eyeB
At every tree he passes byB
Riskin' the direst consequenceC
To sneak inside a neighbor's fenceD
An' shake from many a loaded limbE
The fruit that seems so near to himE
Gosh but once more I'd like to beF
The boy I was in eighty threeF
-
Here I am sittin' with my pipeG
Waitin' for apples to get ripeG
Waitin' until the friendly sunH
Has bronzed 'em all an' says they're doneH
Not darin' any more to climbI
An' pick a few afore their timeI
No legs to run no teeth to chewJ
The way that healthy youngsters doJ
Jus' old enough to sit an' waitK
An' pick my apple from a plateK
-
Plate apples ain't to be comparedL
With those you've ventured for an' daredL
It's winnin' 'em from branches highB
Or nippin' 'em when no one's byB
Or findin' 'em the time you feelM
You really need another mealM
Or comin' unexpectedlyF
Upon a farmer's loaded treeF
An' grabbin' all that you can eatN
That goes to make an apple sweetN
-
Green apple time Go to it boyA
An' cram yourself right full o' joyA
Watch for the farmer's dog an' runH
There'll come a time it can't be doneH
There'll come a day you can't digestO
The fruit you've stuffed into your vestO
Nor climb but you'll sit down like meF
An' watch 'em ripening on the treeF
An' jus' like me you'll have to waitK
To pick your apples from a plateK
